How to make a profile picture
Three steps, all in the browser tab you already have open.
Step 1
Add a photo
Drop it in, paste it, or pick it from your phone. It opens in your browser and is not uploaded.
Step 2
Crop and style it
Drag to place your face, zoom, remove the background, then choose a colour and a border.
Step 3
Download at the right size

What makes a good profile picture
The picture is small wherever it appears. These four choices decide whether people recognise you.
Crop for the circle
Many platforms show the picture as a circle, so anything in the corners is cut off. Keep your face and shoulders inside the circle.
Fill the frame with your face
In a comment thread or a chat list the picture is tiny. Zoom in until your face is easy to recognise at thumbnail size.
Keep the background simple
A plain wall or a single colour keeps the eye on you. A busy background turns to noise when the picture shrinks.
Use a border sparingly
A thin ring in one colour helps the picture stand out against a white or dark feed. Thick borders make your face smaller.
